D FILMS ACQUIRES EXCLUSIVE CANADIAN RIGHTS TO NICOLAS WINDING REFN’S “THE NEON DEMON”

ELLE FANNING AND KEANU REEVES ARE AMONG THE STAR STUDDED CAST.

February 18, 2015 –Toronto, Ontario – It was announced today that D Films Corp. have acquired exclusive Canadian rights in all media to the film THE NEON DEMON.  Directed and co-written by Nicolas Winding Refn (DRIVE, ONLY GOD FORGIVES), THE NEON DEMON is a psychological thriller starring Elle Fanning (MALEFICENT), Keanu Reeves (JOHN WICK), Christina Hendricks (DRIVE), Abbey Lee (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD) and JENA MALONE (HUNGER GAMES).  It will be Refn’s tenth feature film as director; his fourth English language feature.

“Nicolas is a brilliant artist, whose films consistently push the boundaries of cinematic storytelling while being meticulously cool.” said Michael Robson, VP, Marketing & Development for D Films.  “The Neon Demon continues this tradition and we are very excited to bring this film to Canadian film lovers.”

The deal was negotiated by Michael Robson for D Films and Vincent Maraval for Wild Bunch.

January 20, 2015, Toronto, Ontario – D Films will release Israel Horovitz’s new dramedy My Old Lady on home entertainment on February 3, 2015. The film had its world premiere at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival and features an all-star cast including Academy Award® winners Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey) and Kevin Kline (Last Vegas) and Academy Award® nominee Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient).

 

My Old Lady tells the story of Mathias Gold (Kevin Kline), a down-and-out New Yorker who travels to Paris to liquidate a huge and valuable apartment he has inherited from his estranged father. When he reaches his apartment in Paris he finds Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith), a refined old lady living in the apartment with her daughter, Chloe (Kristin Scott Thomas). He then discovers the romantic history between Mathilde and his father, a romance that lasted over half a century.

 

Making his feature film directorial debut is Israel Horovitz, who also wrote the screenplay for the film.  Horovitz is the most produced American playwright in French theatre history and has recently been decorated as Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France’s highest honour for foreign artists.  He has written over 70 plays that have been translated and performed in more than 30 languages worldwide. Horovitz has also written numerous award winning screenplays including The Strawberry Statement, which took the jury prize at Cannes in 1970, the Al Pacino comedy Author! Author! and Sunshine, the winner of the 1999 European Film Award for Best Screenplay.

 

Rachael Horovitz of Specialty Films teamed with French producers Raphael Benoliel, Nitsa Benchetrit and David Barrot to produce.  The film is also co-produced by Marie-Cecile Renauld.

 

My Old Lady was released theatrically on October 3, 2014.

KEVIN COSTNER’S “BLACK OR WHITE” PICKED UP FOR RELEASE BY D FILMS

January 14, 2015 –Toronto, Ontario – It was announced today that D Films Corp. have acquired all rights in all media to the film BLACK OR WHITE, starring Academy Award winners Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer. Helmed by the prolific Mike Binder (MINORITY REPORT, THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE), BLACK OR WHITE tells the story of a  grieving widower (Costner) who is drawn into a custody battle over his granddaughter, whom he helped raise her entire life.

 

Having premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014, BLACK OR WHITE will be receiving its North American theatrical release on January 30, 2015. It is being distributed by Relativity Media stateside. The film was produced by Todd Lewis, Mike Binder and Kevin Costner.

D FILMS TO RELEASE TIFF HIT, THE GUEST, ON DVD/BR/VOD/EST ON JANUARY 6, 2015!

TORONTO CANADA, December 29, 2014 – D Films to release TIFF hit, The Guest, on DVD/BR/VOD/EST on January 6, 2015!The Guest stars Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey fame, Maika Monroe, (At Any Price, Labor Day), Brendan Meyer, Sheila Kelley, Leland Orser, and Lance Reddick (American Horror Story, Intelligence).

The film tells the story of a young soldier who arrives on the doorstep of the Peterson family, claiming to be a good friend of their beloved son who died in action. The Petersons welcome David into their home and into their lives, but when people start mysteriously dying in town, mayhem ensues as their teenage daughter Anna starts wondering if David is responsible.

The Guest comes from the visionary team behind You’re Next, director Adam Wingard, writer Simon Barrett and Snoot Entertainment’s Keith Calder and Jessica Calder. The Guest premiered in Toronto at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Midnight Madness program on September 13, 2014.

ENTER THE SCAREHOUSE ON VOD, EST, BLU-RAY AND DVD ON JANUARY 13, 2015!

October 21, 2014 – D Films will unleash the horror/thriller The Scarehouse on VOD, EST, Blu-Ray and DVD on January 13, 2015 across North America.

The Scarehouse had its world premiere on October 5, 2014 in Windsor, Ontario, where the film was shot, and was met with rave reviews from nearly 1000 attendees. Due to overwhelming response, D Films has extended the theatrical window to bring The Scarehouse to more audiences across Canada.

Two friends open a Halloween fun house on Devil’s Night, an elaborate party for their former sorority sisters. As these six sisters arrive one by one, they are confronted by a troublesome past. When their hosts’ true intentions are revealed, everyone inside The Scarehouse will find out that, indeed, revenge is a bitch.

 

The Scarehouse features a Canadian cast of up-and-coming actresses including Sarah Booth, Kimberley-Sue Murray, Katherine Barrell, Teagan Vincze, Ivana Stojanovic, Jennifer Miller, Dani Barker and Emily Alatalo.

The film is the feature directorial debut from Gavin Michael Booth.  Booth made his reputation in the Canadian music industry, having directed and produced over 50 music videos in the past three years, including working with such top artists as Third Eye Blind, Vertical Horizon, Our Lady Peace and The Dream. His latest short film, To Hell, With Love, generated significant buzz and positive critical response on the film festival circuit.

D FILMS ANNOUNCES A LONG TERM DISTRIBUTION PARTNERSHIP WITH BLUMHOUSE INTERNATIONAL

October 15, 2014 – D Films announced today that it has entered into an exclusive distribution agreement with Blumhouse International, the international sales arm of Blumhouse, which produces micro-budget genre franchises such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister and The Purge.

D Films will exclusively represent all Canadian distribution rights to future Blumhouse productions outside of Blumhouse’s deal with Universal Pictures.

“Blumhouse is the leading genre production company in the world and we are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with them” said Jim Sherry, CEO of D Films.  “The Blumhouse track record of creating highly profitable franchises is unparalleled.”

September 17, 2014 – D Films will release Fred Schepisi’s romantic drama, Words and Pictures, on DVD, Blu-ray, VOD and EST nationwide in Canada on September 30, 2014. The film stars Academy Award® nominee Clive Owen, Academy Award® winner Juliette Binoche and Golden Globe® nominee Amy Brenneman.

Words and Pictures depicts the story of a writer (Owen) whose talent has dried up and an artist (Binoche) struggling to paint as her body betrays her.  The two rivals clash at the school where they teach, sparking both a flamboyant courtship and a school-wide war in which the students decide which is more powerful, the word or the picture?

Schepisi is best known for directing films such as Six Degrees of Separation, Roxanne and A Cry In The Dark, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe® Award for Best Director.  He made his directorial debut in Libido and has since directed 23 films.

Words and Pictures is produced by Latitude Productions’ Curtis Burch in collaboration with the Dallas-based Lascaux Films.  The film was written by Gerald Di Pego (The Forgotten, Message in a Bottle).

Words and Pictures made its world premiere as a Gala Presentation at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. The film was released in Canada by D Films on July 4, 2014 and in the US by Roadside Attractions on May 23, 2014.

D FILMS TO RELEASE SCI-FI THRILLER COHERENCE ON SEPTEMBER 19 EXCLUSIVELY AT THE TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX!

September 9, 2014 – D Films will release the highly acclaimed sci-fi thriller Coherence in Toronto exclusively at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on September 19, 2014.

On the night of an astronomical anomaly, eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of reality bending events. Part cerebral sci-fi and part relationship drama, Coherence is a tightly focused, intimately shot film that quickly ratchets up with tension and mystery.

The film stars Nicholas Brendon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Emily Foxler and Maury Sterling (Homeland), Elizabeth Gracen (Highlander) and is the feature film directorial debut from James Ward Byrkit. Byrkit comes from a background in design, mainly working with longtime creative cohort, director Gore Verbinski, on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Coherence has had a highly successful run on the festival circuit, picking up the following awards to date:
