About Us

D Films is a privately held Canadian independent distribution company. Founded in 2009 by industry veterans Jim Sherry and Darryl Iwai, the company’s primary business is the acquisition of exclusive long-term rights to film and television content for distribution across all media platforms in Canada. The organization has a strategic partnership with NBC Universal Canada who sub-distributes on the company’s behalf in the home entertainment and digital windows. D Films has recently entered into a financing arrangement with EastWest Bank out of Los Angeles. 


Darryl Iwai

Chairman of the Board

DARRYL IWAI is uniformly respected for his long track record of success both within and outside of the entertainment sector. As active Chairman of the Board of Directors of D Films, he assists in the development and implementation of the company’s business strategy and in building strong strategic partnerships and film assets from around the world.

Mr. Iwai was President of PolyGram Filmed Entertainment Canada from 1994 – 2000 where he spearheaded many of the organization’s growth initiatives, most notably in content and library acquisitions and strategic financial partnerships. Under his stewardship, PolyGram distributed many critically acclaimed and commercially influential films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Fargo, The Usual Suspects, Dead Man Walking and the British Comedy sensation Bean.

Following his tenure at PolyGram, Mr. Iwai served as President of Worldwide Distribution for Signpost Films, an international production and distribution company, based in both London and Los Angeles, whose assets were acquired by an affiliate of a major U.S. Studio in 2003.
Mr. Iwai began his career in the entertainment industry in 1987 as Vice President and General Manager of J.L. Bowerbank & Associates, an independent Canadian distribution company that represented Orion and MGM/UA Home Entertainment, amongst many other valuable properties.
He is currently a shareholder and Board member of KTI Limited and Fountain Hills Investments Ltd., private companies operating in the Energy and Real Estate industries, respectively.

Mr. Iwai holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Toronto (1984) and is a Chartered Accountant (1987).

Jim Sherry

President and CEO

Jim Sherry plays a pivotal role in spearheading the company’s strategic direction and management. A veteran of the Canadian and U.S. film business, he brings with him a wealth of knowledge of the North American and international film industries and extensive relationships worldwide.

Sherry’s business career began in 1986 in New York, working with one of North America’s most successful independent film studios, New Line Cinema, where he served as Vice-President of Distribution for eight years. In 1994, he assumed the position of General Sales Manager at Miramax Films, reporting directly to Miramax co-founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein for three years. In 1998, Sherry relocated from New York to Toronto to oversee theatrical distribution activities for Canada’s foremost distribution company, Alliance Atlantis (now Alliance Films). In 2008, he joined Maple Pictures as Co-President before moving on to his new role as President and CEO of D FILMS.

During his long and active career, Sherry has worked on campaigns for some of the world’s most successful independent films, including the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Chicago, Shakespeare in Love, Life Is Beautiful, Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11, Passchendaele, The Rocket, Bon Cop, Bad Cop and Les invasions barbares.
