D FILMS TAKES ALL CANADIAN RIGHTS TO HOTLY ANTICIPATED MONSTERS

FROM MAGNET RELEASING

For immediate release

Toronto, Ontario – May 25, 2010 – D Films has acquired all Canadian rights in all media to Gareth Edward’s hotly anticipated first feature MONSTERS, from Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures. The announcement was made today by President and CEO of D Films, Jim Sherry and by Senior Vice-President of Magnolia, Tom Quinn.

MONSTERS was acquired by D Films from Magnet Releasing following its world premiere at a packed midnight screening at the recent SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Gareth Edwards, an award-winning special effects expert wrote, directed and edited MONSTERS, and also created the special effects.

The story follows a US journalist who agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through an infected, quarantined zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border. Six years previously, the earth was invaded by aliens and new life forms began to appear in Mexico. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain “the creatures”…
Produced by Allan Niblo and James Richardson of UK-based Vertigo Films, MONSTERS was shot on location in Guatemala, Mexico and the US, and stars Scoot McNairy (“In Search of a Midnight Kiss”) and Whitney Able (“All the Boys Love Mandy Lane”).

“We are delighted that Magnolia and the filmmakers alike have chosen D Films as their exclusive Canadian partner on this highly anticipated feature,” said Jim Sherry. “This acquisition continues D’s business strategy of aligning our company with talented filmmakers and projects we strongly believe in.”

With a background in visual effects, Gareth Edwards has created BAFTA award-winning and EMMY nominated visual effects and recently broke new ground directing the epic drama ‘Attila the Hun’ for the BBC, creating all the 250 visual effects himself. Winning SciFi London’s 48 hour film contest led to MONSTERS, his feature film debut.

The deal was negotiated by D Films President and CEO, Jim Sherry and by Magnolia Pictures International Sales Executive, Laird Adamson.
